 yoga and gym workout
Manda wrote on 10/4/2002

Mood  I need advice, I have been going to yoga classes for a couple of months now and have recentlty joined a gym! I wish to get in better shape and burn a few pounds, but am concerned that certain exercises/routines at the gym could be detremental to my yoga practice.
I am new to fitness training etc and would be greatful for any advice in organising, both my gym exercises and weekly training schedule/routine.

Thanks in advance,

Manda.

Mood  Hi Manda
Going to the gym and doing yoga are not incompatible, the only problem I have had with doing both (I now only do yoga) is that working out in the gym sometimes left some of my muscles very stiff which made some postures difficult to get into.

Good luck with your new routine.

Mood  I go to the Gym and attend 2 yoga Ashtanga classes most weeks with no problems apart from having time for other things in my life!

Mood  Hello Manda,
As a Yoga Instructor I believe daily yoga practise is essential if you wish to achieve the svelte look and for it to make a difference to your life and not just a once a week pick me up!
If you still enjoy going to the gym I would recommend using the cardio equipment such as the running machine, rowing machine and stepper to get your heart pumping! (20 mins will suffice). 10 minutes a day of Yoga is absolutely perfect if you have the time and space! Plus 1 or 2 weekly hour and 30 min sessions. Other gym equipment tends to build muscle which really contradicts the main aim of Yoga with its toning and stretching benefits. Good Luck!
